 All Saints Day is celebrated the day after Halloween on November 1st every year. This day is also known as All Hallow’s day or Hallowmass day. And is observed by Roman Catholics and Christians all across the globe. All Saints Day is celebrated to mark, remember and pay tribute to all the saints that have departed or risen to heaven with religious services and festivals. Ever since the 4th century, Anglicans and Roman Catholics have formed a tradition of celebrating and remembering all martyrs and holy saints. This tradition was formalized in 609 A.D. by Pope Boniface IV, who enjoined that all Martyrs should be celebrated on May 13th which was called the feast of All Holy Martyrs. Later Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to also include all Saints and the entire church after which the event came to be known as All Saint’s Day.

Many great Saints have their own feasts that are celebrated during certain days, but the essence of this day is that it celebrates all of the saints that have reached heaven. Christians believe that there is a spiritual bond between those who are in heaven and the ones living below. According to Catholic theology, this day honors and celebrates all those who are in heaven and have acquired direct communication with God. Methodists and other Christians celebrate this day by solemnly thanking God for this life and being grateful to Him for transmitting faith down the generations and also acknowledging the Saints who have reached heaven. Many Christians also elongate the celebrations of this day to everyone who is a Christian. In a biblical sense, “We are all Saints” and hence should be celebrated by and for everyone. All Saints Day is followed by All Souls Day where along with the saints we remember and celebrate our loved ones as well who are not with us anymore.
